The release of the New Mutants will be upon us very soon and fans are quickly coming up with their own theories as to what will happen. With the development hell that the production has gone through, this movie is extremely unpredictable.

With the FOX merger also playing into the events, this project’s plot, characters, and general story remain very unclear. Here are 5 fan theories we think could be completely right and 5 that we believe couldn’t be any further from the truth!

IMPOSSIBLE: MCU CONNECTION

There have been rumors for ages that the Marvel Studios and Disney could have the New Mutants connect to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. To do this they would have to re-shoot some scenes and perhaps change up the script.

While there are points for and against this idea, overall we think it’s impossible that this will be the first introduction of mutants into the MCU. The fact is, Marvel Studios would want full control over a project like this and there are too many variables for them to include it.

MAKES SENSE: MR SINISTER

Essex Corp has actually been teased in a previous mutant movie, so it wouldn’t be all that surprising if Mr. Sinister were to turn up at some point in the film. There has also been talk of veteran actor Jon Hamm being cast in the dastardly role.

We’re not one hundred percent sure on who the villain will be but chances are that it will be Mr. Sinister himself. He is known for experimenting on mutants which is exactly what the trailer seems to suggest is happening.

IMPOSSIBLE: X-MEN CAMEOS

There’s been plenty of people assuming that this will link to the premium mutant team in this universe, the X-Men. Some people have even guessed there could be a number of cameos from past films, perhaps even in the form of a flashback.

However, some theories take this a stage further and suggest that the final sequence of the film will have Professor X arrive to take on the New Mutants to his school. We don’t believe this will be the case and that the film will be self-contained.

MAKES SENSE: DEMON BEAR

One of the other villains that has been discussed for the film is the Demon Bear. Linked to the hero Moonstar, it wouldn’t be all that surprising to see this villain make his way to the big screen, especially since there have been trailer teases of him.

Traditionally Moonstar’s parents are partially responsible for the creation of this bear, however, the origin in this movie may be slightly different. The Demon Bear would fit well with the horror vibes that the production team is aiming for.

IMPOSSIBLE: VILLAIN IS MOONSTAR

Some fan theories have suggested that Moonstar will actually be the main villain, due to her links with the Demon Bear. Perhaps she is controlling it without realizing it, or maybe she’s behind the plot to kill them all.

The chances are this isn’t accurate. Judging by some promotional images Moonstar has actually been attacked by the bear. In the comics, she’s enemy number one, with the demon even haunting her dreams. We can’t imagine she’s actually controlling it.

MAKES SENSE: NATURAL CONCLUSION

There’s also been some talk that this film has actually been written to contain more of a natural conclusion. There are two lines of thought on this. One suggests that because Disney won’t make a sequel, it wants the film to feel complete.

The other suggests that the movie will be some kind of epilogue to cap off the other FOX films. It might not have any direct connections but could serve as a way to cap off this universe for good before Disney moves forward with its own iteration.

IMPOSSIBLE: WORLD WITHOUT MUTANTS

There have been rumblings that this isn’t in the normal FOX universe at all and that this is actually set in a world without mutants. It is titled New Mutants therefore because they are literally some of the first and new to this world.

This would also explain why they are being locked away and experimented on. However, the tone of the trailers plus the link to the source material as well as the lack of risk-taking in some of these films, strongly suggests that this theory is impossible.

MAKES SENSE: LOCKHEED

It makes sense that Magik’s trusty sidekick Lockheed is part of this ensemble. There was talk that he wouldn’t be featured at all and then he was teased to be a hand puppet in the Asylum rather than an actual dragon.

If the creators don’t actually include Lockheed it would be incredibly disappointing for many fans. With the strange world they are trying to create, why not add the mythical creature in the mix to help battle against demon bears and sinister villains.

IMPOSSIBLE: MAGIK AS SORCERER SUPREME

This article has already spoken about the MCU connections seeming far fetched, but even if it was the case there’s a further theory that some fans are prescribing to. There are those who believe that Magik’s destiny could be closer to the comics than you may expect.

Some have suggested that the sequel to Doctor Strange’s original movie could connect to New Mutants and have Magik become the sorcerer supreme unexpectedly. This, however, seems even more unlikely than the previous scenario!

MAKES SENSE: ALL SET IN ASYLUM

Nearly all the images and shots we’ve seen from the film are from the hospital or asylum. Some are suggesting that the movie will actually be entirely set in this building, to keep an air of mystery and continue to ramp up the tension.

It’s certainly a dark and terrifying place and it would be an interesting creative move to have the whole thing set in this kind of haunted hospital. We not only think that this makes complete sense, but we’re also hoping that it actually happens!
