When it comes to the American Disney Parks, it’s a regular battle of the East Coast and West Coast. In California, you have Walt Disney’s original theme park with all its history and happiness. Down in Florida, you’ve got the Walt Disney World resort, known as the most magical place on earth. So, who really holds the keys to the (magic) kingdom?
Walt Disney World was essentially designed to be Disneyland 2.o, but there are still several things that did not transition to the original park. With all things considered, how do the two compare nowadays? Let’s find out as we look at these unique Disney experiences.
Disney World: The Country Bear Jamboree
We’re giving Zeke and Zeb and Ted and Fred and a bear named Tennessee a special mention on our list due to the fact that not only did Disney World’s version of the ride originate in the Florida park, but it outlived its Californian copycat. However, it’s no surprise when you learn that a more popular bear by the name of Pooh was their replacement.
The Country Bear Jamboree is about as campy and ridiculous as a Disney attraction featuring animatronic redneck bears can possibly get, but it’s not without its fanbase. Sadly though, Disneyland’s version went into hibernation when they brought in the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
Disneyland: Marvel Meet and Greets
Disney World’s Frontierland has its Country Bears, but Disneyland has the Avengers… or at least some of them. Though you might on occasion see a Marvel character for a special event in Florida, like the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Ride perhaps, you won’t see many of them assembling any time soon.
Due to contract negotiations with Universal, Disneyland is where you’ll find your favorite faces of the MCU, including the likes of Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Captains Marvel and America at Superhero HQ. If there’s one thing we envy California adventure for, it’s this lovely feature.
Disney World: Carousel of Progress
Disneyland might be the real OTP (original theme park), but only in Walt Disney World can you find one of the most historic and beloved attractions in all of Disney History. One of the only attractions in the Florida park to bear Walt Disney’s own personal touch, we give to you the Carousel of Progress.
There’s a great, big, beautiful tomorrow, and you can only find it in the Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland, right across from the exit to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. Though it might be a little dated by today’s standards, there’s still a lot of love for this long-standing animatronic experience.
Disneyland: A Better Fantasmic
Though both parks have their own version of the attraction, they are practically night and day compared to one another. The one presented at Disney World’s Hollywood Studios is great, but the one at Disneyland definitely has more structure, sequences, and story to give it that extra oomph.
Featuring sequences starring Kaa, King Louie, the Genie, and the Pirates of the Caribbean that are all absent from the Florida version, there’s definitely a lot going on with this vivid and colorful display of lights, music, and waterworks. Do we even have to mention their version of the Maleficent Dragon?
Disney World: The Hall of Presidents
Disneyland’s equivalent might feature arguably our most prolific and influential president with Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln, but the Hall of Presidents in Magic Kingdom’s Liberty Square contains not one, but forty-five of our nation’s leaders brought to life by the magic of Disney Imagineering.
From Washington to Trump, all of America’s presidents have been brought together through Disney’s audio-animatronic technology. Though there is some serious uncanny-valley-type action going on here, we can’t say we don’t enjoy the Imagineer’s attention to detail and technology.
Disneyland: Matterhorn Bobsleds
Disney World might have the original Space Mountain, but Disneyland is home to the one and only Matterhorn Bobsleds. Known as the first tubular rollercoaster, the Matterhorn was not only a unique and inventive ride when it first opened, but one that would be a heavy influence for other rides in other Disney Parks.
If you look at the track layout for the original Matterhorn and compare it to the Magic Kingdom’s Space Mountain, the two are remarkably similar, though not identical. Both coasters, however, would go on to inspire Goofy’s Flight School and the Primeval Whirl respectively.
Disney World: Expedition Everest
Now we take you from one yeti-filled rollercoaster to another with Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Disneyland’s Matterhorn might be a fun adventure with a splashdown or two, but Expedition Everest is a 100 percent thrill ride. And believe us when we tell you, thrills aren’t the only thing that’ll get you on edge on this ride.
The wind isn’t the only thing howling on Expedition Everest, even though it’s the tallest roller coaster on Disney property. It’s also home to one of the most intimidating and frightening animatronics Disney has ever constructed. Not to mention it also features a backward drop and steep hills. It’s definitely one of Disney’s most intense experiences.
Disneyland: California Adventure
Since the title of this list involves park-specific experiences, we had to include Disney’s California adventure. Heck, California is literally in the name! Built to compete with the multiple park experiences in Walt Disney World, California Adventure might be one of only two parks at Disneyland, but it has a lot to offer.
From the classic film feel of Hollywoodland to the tip of Grizzly Peak, this park is chock-full of experiences, rides, and attractions to satisfy your desire for Disney. If you take the magic of Disney and fuse it with the iconic Californian landscape, you’d get this diverse and delightful park.
Disney World: Multiple Parks
When it comes to a veritable variety of experiences, Walt Disney World definitely has Disneyland beat when it comes to the numbers game. The property is home to the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, as well as two different waterparks to visit.
There is practically a park that will suit any taste of any guest. You have the Magic Kingdom for the young and young at heart, Hollywood Studios for the glitz and glamor of classic movies, Epcot for the world of tomorrow, and Animal Kingdom for those who just want to go wild. Variety is the spice of life after all.
Disneyland: Walt’s Original Park
If it’s one thing Disneyland will always, always, always have over Disney World, it’s the history. The Florida park might add new attractions, new rides, and acquire new properties, but it will never be the house that Walt Built. Disneyland was Walt Disney’s vision of a perfect theme park, and only there can you find his original designs, rides, and conceptions.
Only at Disneyland can you walk the path Walt Disney walked back in the day, you can even see his original Disneyland office. This park isn’t just a theme park featuring famous Disney characters, but a historical monument to one man’s innovation, creativity, and imagination.
