All movie lovers and avid theater-goers know that December is a month to be excited for. There are tons of movies that are coming out on Christmas Day, and even more that will fill your whole month of holidays.

With December 25th just around the corner, we thought we’d make a list so you’ll know which films to definitely go see with your family and friends. Here are 5 Christmas releases that are highly anticipated, and 5 underrated ones that you should certainly hit the theater to see. Celebrate Christmas at the movie theater!

Anticipated: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

It’s probably not a secret to anyone that this film is premiering later this month, on December 20th, 2019. So, we thought we’d start this list off with probably the most anticipated/obvious flick. This is the ninth film in this famous franchise, and we’re definitely ready for more Jedi action. This is the final chapter of the Skywalker saga, and we know that ALL of you are going to hit the theaters. We can hardly wait, and this is certainly one of the best ways to celebrate the holidays.

Underrated: Spies in Disguise

We all love a good family flick over the holidays, and this one might just be the best pick to take your little ones to. Released on December 25th, 2019, this will definitely lift your spirits for the holidays.

The world’s best spy is turned into a pigeon, and a nerdy tech officer is his only hope to save the world. Voices include Karen Gillan, Tom Holland, Rachel Brosnahan, and Will Smith. This is certainly going to be the family flick for December.

Anticipated: Cats

There’s some mixed anticipation about this film, but we know that everyone’s heard of its upcoming release on December 20th. This live-action flick is bringing this classic tale to life in a musical, comedic, and dramatic fashion. Of course, it’s also full of famous faces (who, now have cat faces). With Idris Elba, Francesca Howard, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, James Corden, and many, many more, this movie is certainly anticipated, and we hope you all head to the theater for a magical and musical holiday.

Underrated: Just Mercy

With everyone focused on lightsabers and war flicks, this drama has kind of slipped under the radar. Starring Brie Larson, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Foxx, this movie follows a civil rights defense attorney as he recounts one case of his career, where he fought to free a prisoner on death row. Coming out on December 25th, 2019, this cast is stacked, and we all love a good courtroom drama, even if it doesn’t exactly put us in the holiday spirits.

Anticipated: Jumanji: The Next Level

This flick premiers on December 13th, and we know that you probably already have tickets. This hilarious crew is back for a second go, and they’re bringing this classic story to the big screen once again.

This cast is phenomenal together, and we know you can’t pass up Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, the Rock, AND Nick Jonas. This is a great way to get some laughs in with your family for the holidays, and we expect this sequel to be as wickedly funny as the first.

Underrated: Uncut Gems

This movie is definitely slipping under the radar, but it already has some stellar reviews. Directed by the Safdie brothers, this crime comedy tells the story of an NYC jeweler who makes a series of high-stakes bets. He balances his business, family, and all of his adversaries, all for the big win. Starring Adam Sandler, Julia Fox, and Kevin Garnett, this flick is one you might want to check out on December 25th, 2019, and it might just be Sandler’s best movie to date.

Anticipated: 1917

This war flick is already making waves, and it hasn’t even been released yet. You can head to the theater on December 25th, 2019, because nothing says Merry Christmas like a tale of the first World War, right?

Seriously though, this Sam Mendes directed war drama looks phenomenal and tells the story of two young British privates who must deliver a message to save a troop of 1,600 men. The cast is amazing, and this flick will definitely be worth your time.

Underrated: Richard Jewell

This drama definitely hasn’t been as hyped as some of the others, so we’re happy to include it on this list. Directed by Clint Eastwood, this movie tells the story of a security guard, Richard Jewell, who saves thousands of lives at a bombing at the 1996 Olympics. However, he’s vilified by the press, who falsely report him as a terrorist. This is definitely a story worth telling, and we’re certainly expecting brilliant things from this flick on December 13th. Plus, the cast should be incredible.

Anticipated: Bombshell

This movie is the strong female movement we need to ring in the new year. Premiering on December 20th, this biography drama tells the true story of the downfall of Fox News head, Roger Ailes, and the powerful women who made allegations against him. Starring Margot Robbie, Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and John Lithgow, this Jay Roach directed film should fire you up, and it’s expected to be brilliant. Of course, it’s also the perfect dose of feminism and tells a story that should be known by all about toxic work environments and sexism.

Underrated: Little Women

We know most of you have probably heard of this upcoming flick, but we think it can’t get enough hype and anticipation. This remake of this classic story is directed by the brilliant Greta Gerwig, and includes Saorise Ronan, Emma Watson, Timothée Chalamet, Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, and many more! We’re more than stoked for this beautiful film, and you can catch it on Christmas day. We all love this tale, and this cast and crew should bring it to life in one of the most incredible versions yet. We can’t pass this up, and we think this is a quirky, wholesome, and hilarious way to celebrate the holidays.
