Now that Marvel and Sony have finally reached a deal regarding the rights to Spider-Man and we’ll be seeing Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the MCU once more, fans are rejoicing. But the details of this deal are being kept under wraps, with some suggestions that Marvel might have to use the next two movies to write Spidey out of the MCU.
Or Holland might be pulling double duty by doing MCU movies and Sony movies at the same time. With that in mind, here are 5 MCU Movies (And 5 Sony Movies) We Want To See Tom Holland’s Spider-Man In.
MCU: Avengers 5
Kevin Feige knows what the MCU’s next Avengers roster will be, and has promised that it will be “very different” from the previous roster. The Infinity Saga’s Avengers movies revolved around the six members who were there from the beginning – Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the Hulk – so the other characters, no matter how significant, fell a little bit by the wayside.
The fifth Avengers movie will probably feature a lot of new characters, but the Infinity Saga’s latecomers like Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and of course, Spider-Man should be given a chance to shine, too.
Sony: Venom 2
While he’s too recent a creation to be considered among Spidey’s all-time classic villains, like Doc Ock and the Green Goblin, Venom is an important part of the Spider-Man mythology. The new Marvel deal keeps Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Tom Hardy’s Venom further away from each other than Amy Pascal would like, at least for now.
But comic book fans still want to see Spidey and Venom on the big screen together (in a way that properly represents the characters’ kooky love/hate dynamic, not the hatchet job that was Spider-Man 3), so Spidey should appear in the upcoming Venom sequel.
MCU: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Tom Holland has already said that he’d like to see Spider-Man team up with Doctor Strange in a future movie, because their clash of science and magic would be fun to explore, and Strange is a lot like Peter’s old mentor Tony Stark, so his affinity towards the Sorcerer Supreme would be understandable.
Based on the title, it seems like Stephen Strange will have to face a multiverse in disarray in his solo sequel, which could lead to Peter Parker getting involved. Although Mysterio unsurprisingly turned out to be lying about the multiverse, Far From Home did establish that Peter has a deep understanding of the multiverse theory, so he could be of use to Strange.
Sony: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel
Marvel reportedly told Sony to cut a cameo appearance by Tom Holland’s Peter Parker from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but now that pressure from fans and heated negotiations have forced the two studios to play nice, perhaps he can appear in the sequel.
The great thing about the Spider-Verse movies, as proven by the first movie’s post-credits scene taking a detour to the old animated series, is that different franchises can simply be written off as an alternate dimension. Holland’s Spidey could come from an alternate reality where there’s a bunch of superheroes and he was mentored by Tony Stark.
MCU: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Due to the farcical firing and subsequent rehiring of James Gunn at the hands of Disney, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been indefinitely delayed. It probably would’ve hit theaters in 2020 and been one of the first entries in the MCU’s Phase 4, but now, it looks like we won’t be seeing it until Phase 5 rolls around.
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man went to space in Avengers: Infinity War and fought alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy (after briefly having his life threatened by Star-Lord). He even ended up saving Mantis’ life. There’s unexplored territory with these characters, and it would be a lot of fun to see them on-screen together again.
Sony: Morbius
Since a lot of fans are unfamiliar with Marvel’s vampiric baddie Morbius the Living Vampire, Sony’s Jared Leto-starring solo movie might need a cameo appearance by Spider-Man just to let audiences know that Morbius is a Spidey villain. It also might be our only chance to see Spider-Man fight Morbius on the big screen, because Morbius is too obscure and drinks too much blood to ever be included in an MCU movie.
And it looks like Disney and Sony have worked out their negotiations to keep Spidey out of Sony’s Marvel Universe (for now). The promise of seeing Tom Holland’s Spidey might get more asses in seats than the promise of just Jared Leto as a vampire.
MCU: Captain Marvel 2
When Carol Danvers arrived on the battlefield in Avengers: Endgame to take the Infinity Gauntlet from Spider-Man, he introduced himself as Peter Parker and she smirked and said, “Hi, Peter Parker.” It was a very brief moment, but it did tease a fun dynamic to be had between the two.
Carol is snarky and a little condescending as it is, so pairing her with an adorable teenage superhero who gets starstruck around adult superheroes would certainly be a lot of fun. Maybe he could make a cameo appearance, or even have some kind of sidekick role, in Captain Marvel 2.
Sony: Kraven the Hunter
Sony is committed to making a bunch of villain movies, but villain movies don’t work, because, by their very nature, villains need heroes. With Venom, they turned a villain into an antihero and gave him an evil villain to fight, but that wasn’t very interesting. Villains work best as villains. And every villain sees themselves as a hero, and the hero as a villain.
A great way to make a Kraven the Hunter movie would be to tell the story of Kraven’s hunt for Spider-Man from Kraven’s perspective. It would be a regular superhero movie, but with the central dynamic flipped on its head.
MCU: Young Avengers
A lot of fans have been theorizing lately that Marvel Studios is planning to branch out with the Avengers and split them up into a few different teams over the course of Phase 4. The original team might reform with newer characters like Captain Marvel and Black Panther; overlooked characters like Scarlet Witch and Ant-Man might form the West Coast Avengers, and younger characters like Kate Bishop and Riri Williams could form the Young Avengers.
Kevin Feige has said that a Young Avengers movie is a real possibility. As the Avengers’ resident teenager, Spider-Man would make a natural fit for the Young Avengers. He could get the team together, teach them how to be superheroes, and set them off on their own adventures.
Sony: The Sinister Six
Amy Pascal mentioned recently that Sony has put its Sinister Six movie back into development. Years ago, the studio painstakingly set up the formation of the Sinister Six in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and then tragedy struck – everyone hated The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and it had a disappointing box office run. So, the Sinister Six movie that the studio was developing with writer-director Drew Goddard was canned.
Now that it’s back on track, they’re just waiting for Goddard to become available. Superhero fans have wanted to see Spidey battle the Sinister Six on the screen for years. With Spider-Man involved in the final battle, The Sinister Six could be the dark flip-side of The Avengers, with the team getting together and uniting against a common enemy, but instead of Loki, that enemy is Spider-Man.
