New Mutants has officially been given a second trailer showcasing that Disney now seems pretty committed to releasing the film in some form. While rumors suggested this could be a streaming exclusive, for now, it appears to be going to cinemas.

There’s plenty of people who believe that this latest mutant film should actually be the first appearance of the species in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here’s five reasons why we agree with that and five reasons we think the film should be separate from the MCU.

SHOULDN’T: FILM QUALITY

The quality of the film could be a good indicator as to why Marvel Studios don’t want the project anywhere near the rest of their films. Although there’s been mixed early responses, the production of the film has been a bit of a mess.

It has been delayed in part due to the FOX and Disney merger, but the track record of previous films in this franchise isn’t exactly consistent. If the film is bad then it’s best that we don’t see this version of mutant kind in the MCU, until a better movie is made.

SHOULD: MCU MUTANTS

The MCU has been waiting a long time for mutants to arrive, so on that basis alone, it would be great to have them added. Sure there’s a number of other rumored projects that could add the mutants, but this makes sense as an addition.

We would like to see the mutants in the MCU as quickly as possible so that we can get to some of the bigger teams and crazier villains. That’s not to say that we want the process rushed, but there’s a mutant film ready to be added to this larger slate, so let’s add it!

SHOULDN’T: SONY CONFUSION

There’s already a lot of confusion surrounding the state of Marvel properties that are and aren’t owned by Disney. The general public won’t know the ins and outs of any studio interaction, so they could be confused by how this all works.

It’s been well known for some time that FOX owns the mutants, and Sony owns the web-head. With Morbius confusing matters already for the general movie going audience, perhaps keeping the mutants separate is a good idea, to deal with one crossover at a time.

SHOULD: EASY FIX

Because the film is already completed, and Disney has had so much time to edit it, it’s likely a pretty easy fix to include these mutants into the larger MCU. As far as we know, this film isn’t connected to any of the other FOX mutant films.

Not only this, all there would need to be is a few extra references to the MCU or perhaps even an added scene explaining where these gifted youngsters have been all this time. With a little creativity this can be a very simple process.

SHOULDN’T: BEST INTRODUCTION?

We’re not sure that this is exactly the best introduction for these characters. Sure it would be something completely fresh since the movie doesn’t feature the big guns like Cyclops or Jean Grey, and it would make sense to start with younger characters.

At the same time, audiences may want to see the more famous mutants earlier on, or perhaps see how mutants came to be through the other films, before they get their own spin-offs. This just may not be the right starting point for this part of the universe.

SHOULD: INTERESTING CHARACTERS

The creative team behind New Mutants have actually chosen some really interesting characters to explore. There’s a wide variety of people that they could have chosen, but they have developed the best team possibly for the cinematic debut.

Characters such as Wolfsbane and Sunspot have been destined for a movie appearance for some time. Magik in particular is likely to steal the show as she’s already a fan favorite character that could fit in so well with Doctor Strange and the wider magical realms.

SHOULDN’T: FOX REMINDER

The problem with using this movie as the launchpad for the mutant MCU crossover is that it will heavily remind fans of the time that FOX owned the property. Disney probably wants to move far away from any comparison from what previously took place.

The fact is, FOX got some things really right and some things really wrong. The casting of Wolverine for instance may never be matched, while the last film in the franchise left a lot to be desired. Starting fresh is the best way to move on quickly from this.

SHOULD: DIFFERENT TONE

The tone of the film is going to be unlike anything we’ve seen before. It might not quite fit into the mold that the MCU has created, but that’s a good thing. It appears that New Mutants will actually be more of a thriller and a horror film.

Not only does that keep the superhero genre fresh, but if it has great success, it could allow for more opportunities in the future for Marvel to push the boundaries of what can be done and continue to move into different genres and stronger tones.

SHOULDN’T: BIGGER PLANS

There are clearly bigger plans in the works for how the mutants will be added to the MCU. In fact, it may be through retconning the origin of Scarlet Witch in order to have her tie in closer to the comics rather than the ‘miracle’ she was presented as.

There are also other plans to bring the Inhumans in which could clash with adding the mutants at this stage. Therefore, it may just be too early and could ruin other plans down the line, which would see a much better delivery of mutants into this world.

SHOULD: CONFUSING NOT TO

It might actually be more confusing to audiences for the New Mutants not to be a part of the MCU. People are aware that Disney has bought FOX, so it may seem odd that the next film with a Marvel logo on it still isn’t actually a Disney production.

It could actually make more sense to just add New Mutants to the MCU lineup. To not do so would create more confusion as people will just assume that it’s part of the universe and will start waiting for characters like Magik to team up with Spider-Man or Captain Marvel.
