From series to movies to books to comics to games, Star Trek is a franchise that has spread to all kinds of mediums and attracted the attention of thousands, if not millions of fans. Though it is not going through its best times right now, it is still a huge franchise.
Sooner or later, it would attract a director that would be able to match its greatness, and this person turned out to be no other than the iconic Quentin Tarantino. Here are 5 reasons why we want to see Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek movie (& 5 why we don’t).
We Don’t Want: The Alternative Is Kill Bill Vol. 3
You have probably heard that Quentin Tarantino is planning to direct only one more film. Supposedly, this last work of his is going to be the Star Trek movie that everyone has been talking about, but there is an alternative course of action he might take.
There have been rumors of Tarantino potentially making a third Kill Bill movie where the grown-up daughter of one of the Vipers that The Bride killed seeks revenge. If the choice fell between the two projects, the director would probably choose Kill Bill rather than Star Trek (and his fans would be happier too).
We Want: It Could Resurrect The Franchise
Star Trek and all the media related to it has had its ups and downs, but recently, the franchise has been in decline with the latest movies being only faded versions of the older ones that remain some of the best ones (the series have seen a similar trend).
But Tarantino’s direction could resurrect the franchise and give it a new life. After all, he is considered one of the greatest directors of our time and in the history of cinema. Surely, he would find a way to put the franchise back on its feet.
We Don’t Want: It Might Be Too Different
That being said, Quentin Tarantino might also end up being the one who makes the movie too different from its predecessors. Change is inevitable, but if it is too sudden and if it goes in the wrong direction, it might do more evil than good.
Fans could potentially be divided much like Star Wars fans have been ever since Disney started making the sequel trilogy and the spin-offs. It is impossible to please everyone, but making the majority happy should be a priority rather than dividing people too much.
We Want: New Audiences Will See It
As mentioned earlier, Quentin Tarantino has fans. These are, in fact, quite similar to the fans of various franchises you might meet, though Tarantino’s fans admire his works as separate creations rather than one big world (despite there being theories about the connections his movies have).
In any case, these fans of his might not be the same people who usually watch Star Trek. But if Tarantino decides to make the movie, they will come and see it, and maybe even become Star Trek fans themselves, making the film a commercial success.
We Don’t Want: Tarantino Has Not Worked With Sci-Fi Yet
There are some directors like Christopher Nolan who have worked with sci-fi and proved that they know how to handle this genre. However, Quentin Tarantino is not one of them. His movies have fantasy-like elements, but they are mostly grounded and never go to space.
Even though he is undoubtedly a great director, Tarantino has never worked with sci-fi, which may be a challenge for him in the long run. He is great with many genres such as Westerns, but it is crucial to have at least some knowledge of the science fiction genre to be able to direct Star Trek.
We Want: Tarantino Will Push The Boundaries
Throughout his career, Quentin Tarantino has been known as someone who likes pushing the boundaries of what is allowed. Obviously, he will want to do the same thing with his own Star Trek movie and will ask for as much creative freedom as possible.
Tarantino is not afraid of taking risks and talking about taboo topics. He loves experimenting, mixing things, and finding his own way to approach different problems. For a franchise like Star Trek, some risk-taking might be the thing that saves it in the end.
We Don’t Want: An R-Rated Star Trek
That being said, an R-rated movie might not be the best thing for Star Trek. Most current fans of the franchise are not children, but if Star Trek wants to continue existing, it will need to attract younger generations to see its movies and shows.
Logically, this might become virtually impossible if the movie is R-rated, and children and teenagers won’t be able to get into the cinema to see it. Besides, studios are not very fast about approving such movies either because they always have the risk of flopping at the box office because fewer people come to see them.
We Want: A New, Original Story
No matter how scary it might be to make a new Star Trek movie seeing that both films and shows have been poorly-received in recent years, a new, original story will definitely be the one that will become a big hit if it is done right and the older works and fans are respected as they should be.
Seeing characters return is great, but even if a completely new course is chosen, it can still be wildly successful. Yes, the hardcore fans will be upset more probably than not, but it’s nothing compared to the possibility of appealing to new audiences and finding a new direction for the franchise.
We Don’t Want: Another Bad Star Trek Movie Is A Bad Idea
As mentioned earlier numerous times, both studios and fans are tired of bad movies and series. Even if it is Quentin Tarantino himself making the movie, it will still be a huge risk and maybe even an unnecessary creation that doesn’t get any continuations.
On the other hand, Tarantino is known for creating extremely engaging stories with unique dialogues and amusing characters. If he is the one to write the screenplay for the movie, he will probably make it as good as any other creation of his.
We Want: Quentin Tarantino Is Directing
The biggest argument anyone can make in favor of Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek… is that he is the one directing it. Period. There are many iconic film directors, and Tarantino is indisputably on that list of history’s greatest movie creators.
If this is not enough of an argument to forget all the negative sides this movie might have, then no other director - well, maybe except for Christopher Nolan - would be able to change the situation.
