Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) comes out next week (February 7) and will begin the new decade on a very unique foot for the DC Extended Universe. With the success of 2017’s Wonder Woman fans are hoping this new female-led feature will be just as well-received and exciting as its predecessor.

There’s a lot of change and a lot of hope focused on the upcoming slate of DCEU projects, both for the big and small screen. Here are some of the most exciting upcoming stories, and a few that the public is just a little bit worried about.

Excited - Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman will be a major presence in the first part of the decade. Wonder Woman 1984 will be released June 5 and the trailer already has fans excited about this follow up to the phenomenal Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins have already proven themselves as the team to beat in the DC lineup. Gadot has also been a standout in both The Justice League and Batman vs Superman. As far as heroes are concerned, Wonder Woman is the one to beat on the big screen, and seeing more of her in the coming decade is good news for both the DCEU and the general movie-going public.

Not - DC Universe (TV)

While Titans has been an exciting program to follow in its first two seasons it has suffered during its time as exclusive content on the DC Universe streaming platform. In the current viewing climate that has been inundated with new pay to play streaming services, DC Universe has been unable to entice the following it may have once thought possible. Isolating more content on DC Universe is not something fans are keen on. While the service does include digital comics access $8 a month still makes it more expensive than services like Disney + and Apple TV +.

Excited - Villains

With the incredible worldwide success of the Joker (both at the box office and on the awards circuit) there are likely plans for more standalone features focused on DC properties that are not necessarily heroes. This certainly puts the DCEU in a different playing field than Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. Despite the Morbius trailer from Marvel, it’s already clear that Marvel and DC are working on different playing fields when it comes to their rogue’s galleries. It’s an exciting new world for the DCEU and one fans are hopeful that DC will fully embrace.

Not - Justice League 2

After the 2018 mess that was the first Justice League movie, there’s little clamor for the DCEU to jump right back on that team-up storyline. While no one expects the DCEU to work exactly like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to build some more backstory and make some more fantastic standalone films beforehand.

Wonder Woman 1984 should be a great place to start, followed by the second Aquaman movie, scheduled for sometime in 2022. Just because you have a superhero team at your disposal doesn’t mean it’s always the best idea to use it.

Excited - Green Lantern TV Series

The 2011 Green Lantern movie, starring Ryan Reynolds, encompassed everything that the DCEU has struggled with: an overreliance on CGI, a lack of backstory, too much focus on in-depth comic book mythology. The Green Lantern television show, currently planned for a premiere on HBO Max, hopes to fix those past wrongs. With the DCEUs success with shows like Green Arrow and The Flash on the CW, their track record on the small screen holds up much better than it does on the big screen.

Not - Batman Reboot

The last time fans saw Batman it was on the big screen and he was fighting against Superman. It was not a good look or a good movie. While Batman has seen more reboots than most other superheroes put together, fans have not been particularly thrilled with the details they’ve heard about his next big-screen adventure. The casting of Twilight’s Robert Pattinson, went down like a lead balloon in many places and has not gained a lot of traction since the announcement. Another failed portrayal so close on the heels of the Ben Affleck fiasco will not be a good look.

Excited - Arrowverse Spinoffs

While many have seen the big screen MCU as far superior to that of the DCEU on the small screen it has been a very different game. While all of Marvel’s Netflix shows were canceled early, the Arrowverse just finished perhaps the greatest television crossover event in history with Crisis on Infinite Earths. With that type of success under its belt fans are very excited to see a few new shows that spinoff from the already established Arrowverse including, Superman and Lois and Green Arrow and the Canaries.

Not - Superman 2

There’s a reason a Superman 2 movie is not currently listed on the slate of upcoming DCEU projects. When The Man of Steel was released in 2013 it was to mixed reviews, in part due to the darker interpretation of Superman himself. Fans have been less than embracing of this most current big-screen incarnation of the Kryptonian and are certainly not scrambling for another look. Perhaps it’s time for a Superman reboot instead of another for Batman.

Excited - The Flash

Ezra Miller will finally be getting his movie in 2022. Aside from Gal Gadot’s performance as Wonder Woman, Miller’s embrace of Barry Alan and his superhero alter ego, The Flash, was the one bright spot in the otherwise dismal Justice League movie.

After making an incredible cameo in Crisis on Infinite Earths on the CW it’s about time the world got to see Miller in his own standalone movie that, like Wonder Woman and Aquaman fans are hoping will be a hit.

Not - Reboots

In general, the DCEU on the big screen has felt like nothing but reboots. Every time a project is announced it’s only a reflection of another movie, another hero, another villain, we saw in the previous decade. The gallery of DC heroes is unmatched and, as Marvel already proved, lesser-known heroes can make for some of the biggest box office returns. It’s time that the DCEU started bringing in new heroes instead of more remakes like The Batman and another Suicide Squad.
