Will Netflix move forward with 6 Underground 2? Directed by Michael Bay, the first 6 Underground movie sets up more installments, which could very well happen if the movie proves popular enough. Assuming Netflix pulls the trigger, here’s what the sequel will presumably be about, and who’s reportedly down for more vigilante justice.

6 Underground stars Ryan Reynolds as a mysterious billionaire known as One, a man who earned his wealth by developing groundbreaking tracking technology. One claims to have worked for the CIA, but ultimately decided that he wanted to change the world on his terms. He assembles the titular squad, but must recruit a new member after a mission-gone-wrong in Italy. Aside from Reynolds, the main 6 Underground cast features Mélanie Laurent, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Ben Hardy, Adria Arjona, and Corey Hawkins.

In 6 Underground, the focal unit aims to de-throne the Turgistan dictator, Rovach Alimov (Lior Raz). To do so, they need the help of Rovach’s “democracy-loving” brother, Murat (Payman Maadi). But it all really depends on the reliability of 6 Underground members (certainly Three), and also One’s technological strategy. A climactic boat sequence in Turgistan features the world’s biggest magnet, which is revealed to be quite helpful for our legally-dead heroes, despite some initial phone activation failures. So, what’s next?

6 Underground Sequel Release Date

Netflix hasn’t officially announced 6 Underground 2, though a sequel has apparently always been in the works. When the original film was first announced in May 2018, initial reports implied that Bay was planning for a proper franchise, and 6 Underground does indeed set up not just one but several sequels. Given 6 Underground’s blockbuster appeal and collective star power, Netflix can expect high streaming numbers, even if the film doesn’t receive flattering reviews. Since the sequel hasn’t been officially announced there’s obviously no release date yet. Given Reynolds’ busy schedule and the scale of this kind of production, 6 Underground 2 is unlikely to release before 2022.

6 Underground Sequel Story Details

6 Underground concludes with the titular squad defeating Rovach Alimov, and delivering him to a group of rebels. Meanwhile, One’s crew enjoys some personal time, as Five (Arjona) rock climbs with Four (Hardy), and Seven (Hawkins) moves on from the past. Two (Laurent) and Five (Garcia-Rulfo) take the next step in their relationship, while One discovers that he’s a father - the result of his Parisian fling with an Italian woman named Arianna (Elena Rusconi). So, what’s next?

In theory, 6 Underground 2 will most likely happen. Not only that, 6 Underground appears to set up eight sequels given the number of case files on the wall at the squad’s California headquarters. It’s unclear who the 6 Underground crew will battle next, but the franchise could certainly explore uncertainties about each member’s past. On the surface, One remains the most mysterious. But consider this: 6 Underground also reveals little about Arjona’s doctor character, Five. 6 Underground 2 will mostly likely take place in various international cities, and have a budget that will match or exceed the first installment’s $150 million cost.

What 6 Underground’s Cast Want In A Sequel

At the end of 6 Underground, Reynolds’ character states that “I am One but not done.” But it’s not entirely clear if Reynolds wants to make another eight movies. At the 6 Underground press junket, he spoke with Screen Rant about the concept:

However, Reynolds is definitely down for 6 Underground 2, just with a different narrative feel:

“You know, as an actor, we’re always in that stage of where’s our next meal coming, where’s our next job coming? So for an actor to do a series of nine movies would be probably pretty great. That’s a very uptown problem to happen. I don’t know, they’d have to be completely reinvented each time.”

Both Laurent (Two) and Hawkins (Seven) want to make 6 Underground 2 for Netflix because of where it could take them, both literally and figuratively. Laurent described her Italian experience as “a dream,” and Hawkins feels the same way:

“I don’t know, I think it’d be fun to just get some sort of Thomas Crown vibes in there, like an old-school kind of heist. Like Eastern Europe kind of heist movie.”

“Italy was amazing, it was so beautiful. I mean, literally driving through Florence and Siena and Rome… and blowing stuff up and having people run down the top of the Duomo - people actually did that, and it’s never been done before.”
