It is time once again for the Primetime Emmy Awards, where the 2019 nominees are an interesting mix of returning favorites and very welcome newcomers. While the nominations were dominated by HBO and its outgoing contender Game of Thrones, streaming services and cable networks once again make up the majority of who’s vying for Emmy gold this year.
Though the deck seems stacked in HBO’s favor — particularly in the supporting actor and actress categories — there’s still plenty of potential for an upset or two. One key race sees HBO potentially upsetting itself with current critical darling Succession aiming to rob Thrones of an Outstanding Drama Emmy in its final season. Meanwhile, Fleabag and Russian Doll are aiming to keep The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel from going back-to-back with in the Outstanding Comedy category.

Overall, for those who enjoy Hollywood’s pomp and circumstance and very obvious self-congratulation, the Emmys continue to be an entertaining way to ring in the fall TV season, and, for some shows, close out what have been historic runs.
