On the latest episode of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, Benjamin calls out Akinyi for drinking to the point of getting drunk. Watching his bride-to-be get that drunk makes him have serious second thoughts about marrying her.
33-year-old divorced father Benjamin from Phoenix and 25-year-old Akinyi from Kenya who were talking online, finally took the plunge to meet each other in person. Benjamin, a pastor, planned the trip to meet Akinyi and ask her to be his wife. After they’ve spent the first weeks in Kenya getting all of the necessary blessings from all of her family members, and now all that’s left to do is pay the bride price. Akinyi told Benjamin that once her family accepts the offer, they will right at that moment be officially married, at least in Kenya.
It seems that the only issues standing between them and holy matrimony is Akinyi’s drinking a margarita at dinner. On last week’s episode, Akinyi had one alcoholic drink on their first nights alone as a couple and she became fairly tipsy. Disappointed in how the night went, Benjamin had some harsh words for his bride-to-be that next morning. He gave her a glass of water and asked her, “So how much do you remember from last night?” She replied, “I remember drinking, leaving my food, and that’s it.” Akinyi, who hung her head in shame, asked Benjamin, “Are you mad?” He then said, “I guess you could say I was disappointed and hurt.” Akinyi, a bit confused about how getting tipsy could cause so much disappointment, asked, “What did I do?” He replied, “You were intoxicated, disagreeing with me, demanding another drink.”
The 90 Day Fiancé star explains to the cameras that since he came halfway around the world to meet Akinyi, he doesn’t see the point in her “drinking to an oblivion.” He then explains that since he’s hoping to get engaged and married to Akinyi, this behavior is not what he wants. He says to her, “So, about alcohol. Not a good thing, right?” Then says he expects that they will keep it out of their lives. Akinyi doesn’t seem satisfied with this and asks him if he drinks, and he replies, “Occasionally” but “not to a drunken state.” She then reminds him that she doesn’t get drunk often and she feels like he shouldn’t be making a “big deal out of it.” Later, she spoke to the cameras saying that while she does feel bad, she also feels like he’s overreacting and thinks he’s being too controlling, advising him to “chill out.”
It seems that the eight-year age gap and the cultural differences could become an issue in their relationship. It seems that what it means to occasionally drink in Kenya is different than what it means to a pastor from Phoenix. It seems that since it’s only a matter of paying the bride price to Akinyi’s family before they are man and wife, they’ve got some differences to sort out beforehand.
